내밀적 시정詩情의 풍경

김승희는 그동안 자신의 작품에 포괄적인 표제로써 <그릇이 있는 실내풍경>을 즐겨 쓴 것으로 알고 있다. ‘그릇’과 ‘실내’와 ‘풍경’, 언뜻 보기에는 서로 간에 별로 연관성이 없는 대상들이다. 그것이 김승희의 작품에서는 하나의 통합된 세계로서 조화를 이루고 있으며 바로 그의 작가적 atistic 역량의 폭을 보여주는 면이다.

그의 작가적 역량이나 조화 구성력에는 그가 다루는 금속에 대한 독특한 방법들도 힘이 되고 있다. 작가 자신의 메모를 일부 인용해보자. “소재는 금, 은, 동, 적동, 황동, 연철을 주로 사용하였으며 금속을 반짝이게 하거나 자연의 녹을 의도적으로 입힌 검자주색이나 파스텔조의 파랑, 주황들의 색감들을 조화시킴으로써 자연스럽고 부드러우면서도 금속의 특성이 나타나, 좀 더 새로운 조형미를 표현해보려 하였다.” 여기에 언급한 금속 고유의 질감은 그 자체가 이미 공예의 한계를 넘어 작품마다 조형 오브제로서 특성을 극대화 시키고 있다는 것을 알게 해준다. 이를테면 녹슨 구리의 발색은 그 녹과 함께 세월의 깊이는 그속에 감직하고 있는 듯하다. 김승희는 그의 금속공예기법을 활용하여 그가 표현하자고 하는 내용을 우리에게 전달하고 있다.

그의 풍경에서 정물과도 같은 은밀한 자연의 숨결을 느낄 수 있다. 거기에는 시공을 초월한 공간이 있으며, 이 작가의 따듯한 정서가 배어있다. 마치 옛 동산의 추억과 함께 되살아나는 실내악과도 같은 그윽하면서도 향수 어린 시정詩情이라고나 할까.

<Landscape of a  Poetic State of Mind>  Yill Lee_Art Critic, 1995

Seung-Hee Kim gave to her the works the general title of "Interior Landscape with Vessels." It seems that at a glance "vessel," "interior" and "landscape" have no mutual relation at all. Nevertheless, these elements form a harmony as an integrated world in her works which shows the breadth of her artistic ability.

Her peculiar method of dealing with metal plays a part in her artistic ability and harmonious composition. Let me cite a part from her notebook. "Mainly, I use gold, silver, red copper, brass, and soft iron. I sometimes make the metal luster glitter and intentionally coat green patina on copper, and try to harmonize the color tones of purple, pastel green and orange in order to make the metal reveal its natural and soft properties. These are my effort to express a newer plastic beauty." The properties peculiar to metal mentioned above go beyond the limit of crafts and give a full play to the distinctive quality of each work as a plastic object. For instance, the green patina on copper seems to contain in itself the depth of time.

We can fell in her works something like a secretive breath of nature, just like in a still life. Her works contain a space transcending time and space, and the artist's warm feeling. Her works evoke a deep and nostalgic poetic state of mind reminiscent of an echo of chamber music which comes alive along with the memory of by gone days.
